The Chicago Diner, Second City’s beloved meat-free diner, celebrates 30 years of business this month with the slogan “meat free since ’83.” Known for its fun and progressive atmosphere, the Halstred Street landmark once served more traditional healthy staples such as granola and sprouts, but quickly learned that veg patrons wanted more; expanding its menu to include gluten-free items and veg comfort food, the eatery now serves up modern fare with a cruelty-free twist, such as the wildly popular Radical Reuben––a sandwich featuring in-house made seitan. Last year, The Chicago Diner opened a second location on the other side of the city in Logan Square.
