Mike Fremont, a 91-year-old runner who completed the Knoxville Half Marathon in a little more than 3 hours, averaged a pace of 14 minutes per mile. Fremont took up running in 1958 after the death of his first wife, and credits his diet for helping him beat colorectal cancer at 69 when doctors told him that without surgery he had only three months to live. The key to his longevity, he told Running Times, is veganism. “When you get to be my age, you’re not going to be able to train at all unless your body holds up. I simply cannot overemphasize the importance of the plant-based diet to my performance,” says Fremont.
