Horse slaughter for human consumption became an issue of contention after the Obama administration processed a horse-slaughter inspection application from a facility in New Mexico earlier this year. To combat this inhumane practice, a group of equine advocates, ranging from local school children to celebrities, congregated at the Capitol with Senator Mary Landrieu, D-La., Representative Patrick Meehan, R-Pa., and Representative Jim Moran, D-Va. to support the Safeguard American Food Exports Act. SAFE will prohibit horse slaughter in the US and stop companies from shipping horses overseas to be killed for food.
