According to The New York Times, scientists in the Netherlands have successfully created a lab-grown hamburger. Using cow stem cells, Maastrict Univeristy vascular physiology professor Dr. Mark Post’s invention will be eaten at a showing in London as early as in a few weeks. Though Post’s technology requires continuously drawing new cells from animals, technology from other researchers is in the works that use self-propagating stem cells, offering an infinite supply without having to obtain new animal-derived cells. Post believes with his research, lab-grown meat is a reality. “If we can reduce the global herd a millionfold, then I’m happy … I feel strongly that this could have a major impact on society in general,” Dr. Post tells NYT.
