The New Jersey Legislature recently passed a statute that will hold people more accountable for the treatment of their companion animals. Patrick’s Law, named after a dog who was neglected and nearly starved to death, increases the severity of punishment for extreme animal neglect and defines serious bodily injury to an animal. “It is my hope that stronger laws will force people to think twice before taking out aggression or anger on an animal,” says New Jersey senator Tom Kean. “There is no reason that any animal should have to suffer as Patrick did.” Governor Chris Christie needs to sign the law before it takes effect.
