The exponential growth of meat consumption in developed nations has led to dire health and environmental problems around the world, reports The Guardian. Skyrocketing obesity rates, devastating deforestation, and inflated costs of food are just a few of the issues the International Development Committee believes can be curbed if people abstained from eating meat at least one day per week, the British government claims in a report titled, “Global Food Security.” The chairman of the committee, Sir Michael Bruce, warned the UK that wealthy nations were as much at risk of a global food crisis as undeveloped countries. “There is no room for complacency about food security over the coming decades if UK consumers are to enjoy stable supplies and reasonable food prices,” he says.
