A new survey conducted by market research group Mintel has found that faux meat is becoming increasingly popular among omnivores. According to the research, which was released this week, fake meat sales in 2012 reached $553 million—an 8 percent increase from 2010—and while 36 percent of the 2,000 subjects surveyed reported indulging in the cruelty-free fare, only 7 percent of those consumers were vegetarian. Most respondents noted that their reason for eating faux was for health, and many others said that they simply wanted to cut down their meat intake. Veggie burgers were the most favored products among the study participants, while Tofurky and similar mockmeats were also popular.
