Animal Activists Fight for NJ Gestation Crate Ban

A slew of animal-welfare groups are urging New Jersey politicians to override Governor Christie’s gestation crate ban veto.

Earlier this year, New Jersey legislators voted to pass an anti-gestation crate statute that would prohibit the use of the confining cages for pigs on Garden State factory farms. Despite the overwhelming support for the bill in the Republican and Democrat camps, Governor Christie vetoed it—a move that some speculate was influenced by out-of-state animal industry enterprises. Now, animal-welfare groups are stepping up their efforts to try and convince NJ residents to urge local lawmakers to override the veto and pass the bill. To garner public support, the Humane Society of the United States is airing an informative commercial that shows the abhorrent conditions of gestation crates that pigs are forced to endure.
