In a new video released by animal-rights organization, Mercy For Animals, actor Joaquin Phoenix shares the grueling details behind pig gestation crates on factory farms. Pointing specifically to how pigs are raised for pork sold at Walmart, the long-time vegan urges the company to stop supporting the archaic practice—and join Costco, Safeway, Kroger, Target, McDonald’s, and dozens of other grocery chains and restaurants who have phased out the crates. In the video, Phoenix says that “pregnant pigs are confined to filthy metal gestation crates barely larger than their own bodies” and that “every moment is hell on earth.” The Hollywood star is no stranger to animal rights. Going vegan during a childhood fishing trip, he has appeared in numerous public service announcements for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
