When Katie Corbett’s aunt adopted a potbellied pig a few years ago, the now-23-year-old college student was smitten. After bonding with Ruthie and seeing how quickly the pig assimilated into the family, Katie became vegetarian and a passionate animal-rights activist. So when she discovered that a high school near her Athens, GA home was auctioning off a 100-pound pig—and slaughtering services—as part of a school fundraiser, she knew she had to do something. Katie has since launched an online campaign to raise $1,000 to “buy” the pig at the auction and then find her a permanent home. The school’s fundraiser is scheduled for August 27, and Katie has already raised more than half of the funds needed since launching the campaign just yesterday.
