On January 18, fast food chain Chick-fil-A will replace its mayonnaise-laden coleslaw side with a vegan superfood salad option. The new kale-based salad—available as a substitution side for an additional 94¢ and as a stand-alone dish in two sizes—will contain broccoli, roasted nuts, dried cherries and be tossed in a maple vinaigrette. Coleslaw has been on the restaurant’s menu since its opening in 1947, but Vice President of Product Strategy and Development David Farmer told Business Insider that their decision to remove it comes from the fact that “its popularity has waned over the years.” When it comes to the kale salad, Farmer stated that they “have tested it in several markets and gotten a big thumbs-up from customers and restaurant operators.” Other fast-food establishments have recently answered the demand for more vegan options with Taco Bell’s entirely-vegetarian menu, Subway prominently featuring signature vegan sandwiches, and White Castle eliminating l-cysteine from its buns to cater to vegan customers.
