In an open letter to Michelle Obama dated December 29, 2015, four-time NBA champion John Salley asked that the First Lady Take People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal’s 30-Day veg pledge to “set an example for families across the country.” Himself a vegan since 2008, Salley states in his letter that “going vegan is one of the best things a person can do for their health, for animals, and for the environment,” while urging Obama to consider going vegan as part of her wellness efforts as a national leader and parent in her final year in office. When asked about the inspiration behind the letter, the athlete, father, wine producer and vegan advocate—and host of a new vegan show titled The Big V with John Salley—said that “if you scream to the top of the mountain, the people in the middle will hear you.”
