Wendy’s Goes Vegan with New Burger Option
The plant-based burger, which boasts 14 grams of protein, is available in select locations starting this month.

Wendy’s, the nation’s third-largest fast-food burger chain, is testing a vegan-friendly meal option in select locations. The new burger, dubbed simply the Black Bean Burger, is made with wild rice, brown rice, farro, onions, carrots, corn, red and green bell peppers and is served on a toasted seven-grain vegan bun with tomato and a spring mix. The burger is cooked separate from meat and considered fully-vegan when ordered without pepper jack cheese or parmesan-ranch sauce. It was introduced first in early 2015 in Columbus, OH, where the Columbus Underground described it as “pleasant and savory” as well as “shockingly beautiful,” while noting that restaurants were struggling to keep up with demand for the cruelty-free option. Veg eaters can now also find the burgers in Salt Lake City, UT and Columbia, SC. The new option marks the latest vegan-friendly addition to the world of fast-food veggie burgers after by CHLOE, VeganBurg, White Castle, and the city of San Diego made their mark in 2015.
