A recent trend report published by media outlet FoodNavigator-USA explored the resurgence of flaxseed and oil-based products at the recent food convention, SOHO Expo, held in Florida. Writer Elizabeth Crawford pointed out that the popularity of flax can be attributed to two factors, namely, the gluten-free movement and the growth of veganism. The nutritional properties of flax—including its high fiber, protein, and omega-3 fatty acid content—has made it popular amongst those avoiding animal products. “With fish oil as a source of omega-3s, many people are worried about where the fish comes from,” supplement company Barlean’s representative Connie Osstifin said. “With flax, they don’t have to. It’s organic, natural, and safe.” Recent scientific reports indicate that fish populations—including those previously labeled “sustainable”— are on the brink of collapse around the world, making flax a truly sustainable alternative to fish oil.
