Long-anticipated vegan deli The Butcher’s Son opens today in Berkeley, CA. Owned by sibling team Peter Fikaris and Christina Stobing, the deil occupies the former space of a rustic Greek restaurant in a popular vegan-friendly area—with Cinnaholic bakery, Saturn Café, and the Republic of V all within walking distance—and will feature deli items such as housemade feta, wheels of crumbly Cotija cheese, and home-style roast beef. This January, Herbivorous Butcher became the first vegan butcher shop in the US—coincidentally also founded by siblings Kale and Aubry Walch—to open its doors in Minnesota, MN, and received media coverage from outlets such as TIME, BBC, and NPR. Furthermore, YamChops, which recently received $250K in funding on Canadian investment reality show Dragon’s Den, was the first vegan butcher shop to open in Ontario, Canada in 2014. These examples prove that the idea of “the vegan butcher shop” has begun subverting meat-centric butcher culture.
