National fast-casual chain restaurant The Flame Broiler—known for its simple rice-based bowls—recently added a vegan option to their menu at 180 locations in California, Oklahoma, Arizona, Nevada, and Florida. The Flame Broiler has not changed its menu in 21 years and according to CEO Young Lee, this update is in line with consumer demand. “Our customers have been requesting a meatless alternative, so the addition of organic tofu not only allows us to better cater to existing fans, but also helps us to broaden our customer base,” Lee said. The new option will allow customers to choose organic charbroiled tofu as a protein option over white or brown rice and veggies, and comes in three meal sizes—mini, bowl, or plate. As evidenced by Wendy’s Black Bean Burger, Chipotle’s addition of Sofritas, and Subway’s vegan sandwiches, menus nationwide are expanding to include vegan options.
