North Dakota to Get State’s First-Ever Vegan Restaurant

One of the nation’s last holdouts when it comes to plant-based eateries is finally coming around, as North Dakota’s first-ever vegan restaurant is opening in Fargo next month. Green House Cafe, owned by Joey and Abby Haynes, is reducing the number of states without a vegan restaurant to four (including Wyoming, Arkansas, South Dakota, and Idaho), according to WDAY News. The couple originated their business serving vegan lunches at the local farmers’ market and has started a Kickstarter campaign to get the restaurant open as quickly as possible. “North Dakota’s farming industry is huge,” the couple said. “A lot of the crops grown [in the state] are used to feed livestock, when they could be used to feed people. All you gotta do is come in and let us show you that our burgers are going to be as good as any other burgers you can find.” The Haynes’ specialty dishes include whole-food grain bowls in flavors such as BBQ with onions, peppers, black beans, grilled corn, barbecue sauce and fried onions; and Asian with cabbage, onions, carrots, orange-ginger sauce, scallions, and chow mein.
