Florida-based eatery New York Grilled Cheese Co. recently launched a vegan grilled cheese sandwich after customers demanded a cruelty-free option for three years. Founder Leor Barak opened the shop in 2013 and was looking for a dairy-free cheese option that would “taste as good as the real thing.” Barak partnered with Hallandale-based vegan company Atlas Meat-Free Delicatessen to create the long-awaited sandwich The Village Vegan, which features organic and non-GMO dairy-free cheese, caramelized onions, and herb-infused oil. “It’s a product I could finally put the New York Grilled Cheese Co. name behind,” Barak said. The Village Vegan is available at both locations of the restaurant—Wilton Manors and Boca Raton—which Barak plans to franchise. Meanwhile, Atlas Meat-Free Delicatessen will soon open a brick-and-mortar butcher shop in Miami, where their plant-based meats and cheeses will be used to create classic American comfort dishes.
