According to new data published by Google Trends, the most popular dietary search term in 2016 in Australia is “vegan.” Searches for other dietary terms—including “paleo,” “sugarfree,” “5:2 diet,” and “gluten-free”—were substantially lower. Popular secondary terms attached to “vegan” included Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighter Nate Diaz, ramen, and the query “is nutella vegan?” Furthermore, the report showed a visible spike of searches for “vegan” on Christmas Eve, a time when people gather to consume food together. Australians are not the only people interested in cruelty-free diets, as news outlet NY1 said that “vegan food” was the top Google search term among New Yorkers in 2016.
