A study published this month in scientific journal Psychotherapy Research revealed that eating avocado reduces the risk for developing metabolic syndrome (MetS). Researchers from the University of Medical Sciences in Mashhad, Iran reviewed 129 previously published studies about the effect of the fruit on human health and determined that its consumption reduces triglyceride levels, lowers blood pressure, lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, increases HDL (“good”) cholesterol, amongst other benefits. “Satisfactory clinical evidence suggested that avocado can be used as herbal dietary supplements for treatment of different components of MetS,” the review’s authors concluded. MetS is a term used to describe three or more risk factors that contribute to the development of ailments such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Various studies continue to prove that a plant-based diet is ideal for optimal health while ongoing research increasingly confirms that diets heavy in animal products increase risk factors of disease.
