On March 28, Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Environmental Protection Agency to overhaul former president Barack Obama’s Clean Power Plan. The plan mandated that states reduce carbon emissions from existing power plants by 32 percent of their 2005 levels by 2030. While parts of the order may take up to one year to carry out, the impact of easing the emissions limits can result in the increase of greenhouse gas production. According to media outlet Politico, staffers at the The Office of International Climate and Clean Energy began consciously refraining from using the words “climate change,” “emissions reductions,” and “Paris Agreement” after the order was signed. In the midst of what some believe will be a devastating move away from international cooperation toward a climate change solution, actress Ruby Rose—of Orange is the New Black fame—turned to Twitter to encourage her 1.3 million followers to make the connection between animal agriculture and its negative effect on the environment. “Trump changes to climate change today have you feeling ill?” Rose asked. “May I suggest turning vegan or at least vegetarian? We can be the change.” In 2009, a report issued by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations revealed that cows produce 18 percent more greenhouse gases than all of the transportation sector combined.
