Earlier this month, fashion brand TAIKKA launched a line of handbags made from Piñatex—a vegan leather material made from pineapples leaves. The ananas+ line feature two clutches in two colors, black and gold, that are lined with canvas. The brand is a collaboration between Helsinki-born Riikka Juva and Melbourne-born Mia Jones—available in stores in Australia, Finland, and England, and online—who focus on selecting materials fit for all weather conditions. The duo chose to work with Piñatex for its superior durability to animal leather, as well as its water-resistant and sustainable properties. “We love the fact that no harmful chemicals are used at any stage of the production of Piñatex,” the TAIKKA team posted on Instagram to announce the collaboration. Piñatex was developed by Spanish designer Carmen Hijosa in 2016 with the hope of replacing animal leather in the footwear, furniture, automotive, and fashion industries.
