London-based doughnut chain Crosstown launched a vegan sourdough doughnut line this week. The three-year-old shop spent several months perfecting the recipe—which includes chia seeds, coconut butter, and oat milk in place of animal products—to fulfill customer demands for vegan options. “We know that any vegan alternative is always going to invite comparison, and we’re confident that our new vegan doughnuts live up to that comparison,” the shop stated on its website. “They are the real thing, just made with different ingredients.” Crosstown debuted its vegan creation in a Chocolate Ring flavor—a sourdough-based doughnut dipped in dark chocolate. The shop will offer a different vegan flavor—such as Chocolate Truffle, Vanilla Glazed, and Cinnamon Scroll—every week and rotate the three most popular doughnuts. The UK vegan scene has erupted in recent times, and many eateries have recently gone vegan including pizzeria PickyWops, popular café The Fields Beneath, and ice cream shop Ice Shack.
