Pea protein-based milk company Ripple Foods launched a new, kid-friendly line of vegan milk this week. The new offerings will initially include two flavors—chocolate and original—packaged in lunchbox-friendly eight ounce cartons. Ripple was launched last year by two fathers—Adam Lowry and Neil Renninger—with a focus on offering a nutritious dairy-free alternative to milk. The new kids line boasts eight times more protein per serving than almond milk, contains no nuts, and the chocolate flavor is 40 percent lower in sugar than competing chocolate milks. “More thought is going into not only what our kids are eating, but where and how it’s sourced and its impact on the environment,” Ripple’s co-founder Adam Lowry told VegNews. “We’re excited for the opportunity to provide a product that’s nutritious, delicious, and a better option for a healthier planet.” Ripple’s new product line comes at an opportune time, as Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue recently pushed sugar-laden dairy milk back onto the National School Lunch Program, overturning an initiative implemented by the Obama administration that promoted healthier options to students. The chocolate and vanilla varieties will be available at Target stores nationwide starting this week.
