Last month, movie-going/dining concept Alamo Drafthouse Cinema began secretly testing Beyond Meat’s vegan Beyond Burger at a Denver, CO, theater and all of its Austin, TX, locations—including the one ironically located on Slaughter Lane. Alamo replaced its existing veggie patty with the Beyond Burger to create the vegan-friendly Veggie Avocado & Pesto burger. To make it vegan, customers can order the burger (which comes with roasted garlic, hummus, avocado, tomato, and sprouts) without pesto and, as the bun is not vegan, on a bed of mixed greens tossed in a lemon vinaigrette. The theater specializes in creating a unique movie-going experience by allowing customers to order gourmet food and alcoholic beverages during a movie, and all locations feature clearly marked vegan items. “Based off of the initial tasting of the Beyond Meat product,” Alamo’s Vice President of Food and Beverage Jeff Mann told Eater, “we felt this would be a good item to be able to offer our guests that are looking for a vegan burger.” Should the test prove successful, the Beyond Burger will replace Alamo’s existing veggie burgers on menus at its locations across the country in Texas, New York, California, Arizona, Nebraska, Virginia, North Carolina, and Missouri. Last week, chain eatery Epic Burger added the Beyond Burger to all eight of its locations in Chicago.
