Last week, vegan “chip” (what “fries” are called in other parts of the world) truck The Frying Dutchman Co. launched in Huntsville, Ontario. The bright red truck, founded by mother-and-daughter team Sandra Zylstra and Leanna Zylstra-Bigwood, specializes in vegan chili fries—which come in two sizes and are smothered in homemade gravy and bean-based, soy-free chili. Zylstra-Bigwood—who has been vegan for a year and a half—was inspired to launch the truck after traveling through Mexico on her honeymoon and experiencing the sense of community created by the vegan businesses she visited in the country. “I wanted to be able to provide good food and that same feeling to people in my community,” Zylstra-Bogwood tells VegNews. “I also love sharing the vegan message and helping people in their own personal journey—no matter what stage they are at.” In addition to its specialty fries, the truck serves a traditional chip truck menu—including onion rings and vegan hot dogs—and non-traditional items such as its breakfast Strawberry Chia Oat Cup. The duo plans to add barbecue bean burgers, chickpea salad sandwiches, veggie wraps, and more non-traditional chip truck items in the near future. Stateside, fries-only vegan restaurant Baked Roots Bar opened in Portland, OR, in May with a full menu of globally inspired fry dishes.
