San Francisco-based vegan eatery The Flying Falafel will open its second location this weekend in nearby Berkeley. The restaurant will move into the space of shuttered Buona Vita Yogurt and serve pita pockets stuffed with spicy falafel balls, hummus, salads, vegan cheesecake, and non-dairy banana milkshakes. Flying Falafel owner Assaf Pashut opened the first location—a tiny space on Market Street in downtown San Francisco—in 2015 and told media outlet Eater that last month was the shop’s highest-earning ever. The new Berkeley space is much larger, and Pashut hopes to develop new menu items—including more milkshake flavors. The second location will be near University of California, Berkeley, which recently launched a plant-based meat lab to inspire students to create vegan alternatives to animal products.
