According to English-language Indian daily newspaper The Economic Times, lab-grown meat (also known as “clean meat”) is scheduled to be released in India by 2025. Animal-rights organization Humane Society International (HSI) India and the Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology have partnered to unite startups to accelerate the development of the slaughter-free technology, which focuses on creating meat from a small amount of animal cells that are grown in a lab setting. “The cells are tricked into believing they are still in the body and are made to grow,” Alokparna Sengupta, deputy director at HSI, said. “The taste will be the same because clean meat is meat.” In addition, food-technology startups such as JUST, SuperMeat, MosaMeat, and Memphis Meats are currently working to introduce their versions of clean meat to market.
