In a recent video uploaded on Chinese social media platform Weibo, a crayfish can be seen detaching his own claw in order to escape a boiling pot of soup made in a restaurant in China. After seeing the video, many Weibo users left comments asking for the crustacean to be let go. The footage was taken by restaurant goer Jiuke who told users on Weibo that he had later adopted the crayfish as a companion animal. “I let him live,” Jiuke said. “I already took him home and am raising him in an aquarium.” As mounting scientific evidence points to the complex intelligence of crustaceans, compassionate individuals around the world rescue the underwater creatures from consumption, such as Canadian resident Christine Loughead, who spent more than $300 in 2016 to rescue lobster “Lobby Joe” from an Ontario restaurant tank and transport him back to the ocean in Halifax.
