As of last week, coworking startup WeWork will no longer expense non-vegetarian employee meals. WeWork co-founder Miguel McKelvey explained the policy change to the startups’ 6,000 global employees in a recent memo. “New research indicates that avoiding meat is one of the biggest things an individual can do to reduce their personal environmental impact,” McKelvey stated in the memo, “even more than switching to a hybrid car.” The new policy extends to WeWork’s upcoming “Summer Camp” retreat where only vegetarian food options will be served. Last year, foodservice company Aramark partnered with animal-rights organization The Humane Society of the United States to train more than 1,000 of its chefs to create more plant-based menus that it has implemented in hospitals, schools, and workplace cafeterias.
