For Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October), the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM)—a 12,000 doctor member group that promotes plant-based eating—launched the “Let’s Beat Breast Cancer” campaign. The celebrity-backed initiative—which counts couples Jon and Tracey Stewart , Alec and Hilaria Baldwin, and James and Suzy Amis Cameron as supporters—aims to inspire women to follow four steps to prevent their risk of developing breast cancer: committing to a plant-based diet, limiting alcohol consumption, exercising, and maintaining a healthy body weight. “We’re proud to be part of the Let’s Beat Breast Cancer project,” the Stewarts said. “We encourage you to take the pledge to follow the four steps this month.” The campaign is led by breast cancer surgeon and author Kristi Funk, MD and those who take the four-step pledge at LetsBeatBreastCancer.org will be rewarded with a free e-book filled with vegan recipes. “What you eat can either fuel cancer, or help your body seek and destroy it,” Funk said. “Eating whole, colorful plant foods helps your body defend itself from rogue cancer cells.”
