Next year, Nestlé will debut two new vegetarian versions of its classic DiGiorno and Stouffer’s products featuring Awesome Grounds, a plant-based meat created by its subsidiary brand Sweet Earth. The DiGiorno Meatless Supreme will be topped with dairy cheese, olives, bell peppers, and onions, while the Souffer’s Meatless Lasagna will also feature dairy cheese and herb-seasoned tomato sauce—both recipes reminiscent of their original versions but with clear “plant-based protein” labels on their packages. “There’s no denying the current modern food movement is revolutionizing the plant-based space,” Nestlé Foods Division President John Carmichael said. “By adding Sweet Earth Awesome Grounds to Stouffer’s and DiGiorno offerings, we’re able to offer our customers the chance to incorporate plant-based meals into their diets while still enjoying the same convenience and delicious flavor of brands they know and trust.” Nestlé acquired Sweet Earth in 2017 for an undisclosed amount and has since worked to increase its presence in the plant-based industry. This fall, the brand’s plant-based Awesome Burger and Awesome Grounds began making their way into the retail sector. In October, Nestlé also unveiled the “PB Triple Play,” a packaged deal that includes plant-based Awesome Burger, dairy-free cheese, and meatless bacon—allowing food service providers to craft the perfect animal-free bacon cheeseburger. Starting tomorrow, customers can win a free sample of the DiGiorno Meatless Supreme or Stouffer’s Meatless Lasagna through Nestlé’s “Try It Meatless” sweepstakes before both products launch for purchase on Amazon Fresh in the spring of 2020.
