Free solo rock climber Alex Honnold recently partnered with sports nutrition company Momentous to launch a line of vegan protein powder. AbsoluteZero Plant is made from a combination of pea protein isolate and rice protein concentrate and offered in Vanilla Chai and Piedmont Chocolate flavors. The new line is a response to feedback from athletes, professional sports teams, and nutritionists requesting a plant-based version of Momentous’ Essential protein line. “I like the attention to detail behind Momentous,” Honnold, who was personally involved in testing the product line, said. “The ingredients are well sourced and relatively simple, so I actually understand what I’m drinking. And it tastes great, which I consider a big plus. It’s a pleasure to drink.” Honnold—who follows a mostly plant-based diet in an effort to reduce his environmental impact—climbs mountains without the aid of ropes or harnesses. The extreme athlete is best known for his June 2017 ascent of the Freerider route of El Capitan, a 3,000 vertical foot wall in California’s Yosemite National Park, which is documented in Academy Award-winning film Free Solo. For two weeks in April, Momentous donated $6 for every container of plant-based protein it sold to the Honnold Foundation (which the athlete founded to promote solar energy)—enough to buy one solar lantern for a family in need.
