During the APAS trade show this month, Brazil-based JBS SA—the world’s largest meat company—unveiled its first plant-based burger. The new product will be sold under its Seara brand and is made from a blend of soy, wheat, onions, garlic, and beets. As the popularity of plant-based burgers made by companies such as Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods continues to soar, a number of traditionally meat-centric brands are focusing on developing competing vegan products. Earlier this year, Nestlé debuted its Incredible Burger in Europe (now available as part of McDonald’s new burger The Big Vegan TS in Germany) and plans to launch a similar option (called “Awesome Burger”) in the United States through its Sweet Earth brand. Meat giant Tyson Foods—which previously held a 6.5 percent stake in Beyond Meat—aims to launch its first plant-based meat product by the end of this summer.
