Grocery chain Trader Joe’s is in the midst of developing creamy, vegan milk chocolate bars. The news was revealed during the most recent episode of the Inside Trader Joe’s podcast during a conversation between the chain’s marketing director Tara Miller and Alison Nadler Guerette, who is Trader Joe’s category manager for candy, cookies, and cereal. “Our customers are asking for vegan items. Or for instance, we launched almond butter cups this past year. Almond butter was very popular in the grocery category, but we have peanut butter cups so why not almond butter cups,” Nadler Guerette said. “That makes me think of a product that’s still sort of in development but has been approved by the tasting panel,” Miller interjected. The vegan chocolate bar in question is being developed with an “almond beverage” base which imparts a taste that makes it indistinguishable from dairy-based milk chocolate. “But I wouldn’t have known the difference if I hadn’t been told,” Miller said. “It just tasted like really good creamy milk chocolate. And I feel like our vegan customers are going to absolutely flip for that particular bar.” The Trader Joe’s insiders did not share further details about the release of the vegan milk chocolate bar. Trader Joe’s has substantially increased its vegan product portfolio in recent months, including the launch of Plant Based Protein Patties—the grocery chain’s take on next-level vegan burgers—at stores nationwide last week.
