Actress Anya Taylor-Joy—who stars as chess phenom Beth Harmon in popular Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit—has been a vegetarian for more than 15 years and discussed her on-and-off again relationship with veganism in a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “I’ve been a vegetarian since I was eight, so I don’t touch meat or fish,” the Argentinian-British actress said. “I was vegan for a long time. I got into it because it’s the most ecologically conscious choice you can make as a consumer.”

The 24-year old actress explained that she experienced health benefits when she did not consume any animal products. “When I was a vegan it was the healthiest I’ve ever felt, because I had so much energy,” Taylor-Joy said. “I was eating a ton because I have a really big appetite and was getting in more greens. As a vegetarian, I love a lot of Italian food—but I don’t get that many greens in there.”

Thanks in part to Taylor-Joy’s stellar performance, The Queen’s Gambit is Netflix’s best-performing scripted series to date with 68 million households tuning in to watch the series within its first 28 days of release in October.
