Vegan cactus leather company Desserto has been nominated for Germany’s Green Product Award 2020 International Organic Products Award. Created by Mexican entrepreneurs Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez, Desserto is the first organic leather made entirely from the nopal (or prickly-pear) cactus. Due to its flexibility, breathability, and durability, the cactus leather has the ability to replace the use of animal leather and synthetic materials that are not environmentally friendly. The Green Product Award honors companies that create innovative and sustainable products and services. This year, participants from 52 countries have applied for the award. Prizes are awarded in 13 separate categories and nominees are evaluated on a number of criteria, including impact, design, innovation, and sustainability. Winners will be selected by a jury and honored at an awards ceremony on March 11 in Munich, Germany.
