Award-winning musician Lizzo recently took to TikTok to share a vegan recipe she is cooking while sheltering in place during the COVID-19 pandemic: a spicy vegan version of McDonald’s McChicken sandwich. Instead of the animal products used in the original fast-food classic sandwich, Lizzo opted for vegan breaded chicken—which she spiced with garlic powder and Frank’s RedHot Seasoning Blend—Best Food’s vegan mayonnaise, lettuce, and a toasted bun. To finish off the meal, Lizzo baked up some waffle-cut fries. “Vegan spicy McChicken idgaf that sh*t was hittin hoooooo,” the musician captioned her TikTok video recipe.

In between singing and dancing videos, Lizzo posts some of the food she has been making during quarantine and the spicy vegan McChicken sandwich is her first vegan recipe. According to a 2017 interview with fashion brand Nasty Gal’s blog Nasty Galaxy, Lizzo was vegetarian for seven years, vegan for one, and had a special fondness for plant-based food in Minneapolis. “I found places that were really creative with how they made vegan food and it wasn’t just fluff, just tofu, just seitan. It was like, finding ways to make vegetable-based proteins,” Lizzo said. Could the vegan spicy McChicken sandwich lure her back to a plant-based diet?
