Serbian-born tennis champion Novak Djokovic and his wife Jelena recently donated €1 million ($1.08 million) to Serbian hospitals through his organization Novak Djokovic Foundation. “We have spent the past several weeks gathering every piece of necessary information on COVID-19 in order to make this informed decision on how my family could make the biggest and best impact on our country,” Djokovic posted on Instagram. “All the money will go towards the purchase of respirators, medical equipment, and any required supplies like masks.” The 32-year-old plant-based athlete urged others interested in helping the cause to donate through the foundation. “I am very proud to be an athlete in these times, among many greats who have come forward to bring people together at a time when we are apart—to bring hope, community, and inspire others in the same way to use our platforms for good,” Djokovic said. “This is what life is all about—giving.”
In July, Djokovic credited his plant-based diet for winning the Wimbledon Men’s Singles final for the fifth time, beating former champion Roger Federer in the four-hour-long match—the longest single’s final game in Wimbledon history.
