Los Angeles-based food truck The Original Herbivore recently opened a brick-and-mortar location in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood. The food truck is well known in Southern California for its vegan Fried Chick’n, Buffalo Chick’n Sandwich, and Chick’n and Waffles. Owner Sebastian Baranek decided to settle into a permanent location so that he could have a more fixed schedule.

“While running the food truck has been a very good experience and has its own advantages, we find it physically and emotionally draining. Our [food truck] schedule for 2020 was fully booked with various events, and then COVID-19 happened. We had to regroup and go to the streets,” Baranek told VegNews. “We did start negotiating a restaurant lease before COVID-19. We fell in love with the location in Sherman Oaks and we signed the lease. Soon after, we packed our home, two dogs, and a cat and moved from Long Beach to the San Fernando Valley.”

The new eatery is currently open for takeout from Wednesday to Sunday and offers a limited menu while the kitchen is being upgraded. Menu items include Almond Goat Cheese Pizza, Greek Spanakopita, Eggy Salad Sandwich, Reuben, and French Quiche. The Original Herbivore truck is also parked out front to support the restaurant until its kitchen is fully upgraded. Customers can order pizzas, sandwiches, and desserts inside and vegan fried chicken from the truck outside. Once the restaurant is fully operational, Baranek plans to send the food truck elsewhere.
