This week, Warner Bros. announced the release of vegan Butterbeer, a butterscotch-flavored beverage popularized in the Harry Potter series. Previously only available at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter locations, Warner Bros. released a bottled version that can be purchased online and at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, The Making of Harry Potter, and the Platform 9 ¾ Shops at King’s Cross Station in London, along with Heathrow and Gatwick airports. The bottled Butterbeer will be wrapped in a variety of collectible labels.
Stateside, Universal Studios’ Wizarding World of Harry Potter serves Butterbeer but it comes with a dairy-based whipped topping that cannot be left off the drink due to licensing agreements with the Harry Potter franchise owner Warner Bros. In 2018, Harry Potter-inspired fangroup The Protego Foundation (TPF) spearheaded a campaign—a petition for which has thus far gained more than 7,500 signatures—calling for Universal Studios’ Wizarding World of Harry Potter signature Butterbeer drink to be made vegan. According to TPF founder Tylor Allan Starr, a vegan Butterbeer could also be coming to the United States thanks to the campaign. “I genuinely can’t imagine a lovelier day out than going to The Wizarding World to enjoy a Butterbeer with my vegan friends,” vegan actress Evanna Lynch—who played Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter series—said. “I will be first in line when that day comes.”
