New vegan bakery Heyl Bakery will open in Plymouth, England in early 2021. The bakery—founded by former journalist Kate Langston and trained baker Sam Dennis—will take over the bakery space in the Devonport Guildhall, in what was once a mortuary inside the historic municipal building. Heyl will offer naturally leavened sourdough loaves, baguettes, and focaccia, alongside a variety of vegan sweets such as cakes, biscuits, and pastries.

A dream come true
Dennis and Langston have wanted to open their own bakery for years. Dennis received an advanced diploma in artisan baking at the School of Artisan Food and spent the last year working at the renowned E5 Bakehouse in London, England. Langston has been a passionate home baker and the launch of Heyl will make it her profession.

Closer to home
The couple, who relocated to Langston’s home city to start their venture, debuted their bakery products at a pop-up event in Plymouth earlier this month. “We’ve been particularly inspired to see the number of thriving independent and vegan-friendly food businesses that have established themselves in Plymouth in recent years—it feels like the city’s foodie scene has gone through a really exciting transformation,” Langston told media outlet BusinessLive UK. “The events of this year have also highlighted the importance of being closer to friends and family, and as my hometown, Plymouth felt like the perfect fit for Heyl.”
