Inspired by the veg diets of UFC fighter Akira Corassani and MMA photographer Ryan Loco, Ottavia Bourdain—jiu-jitsu practitioner and wife of television food personality Anthony Bourdain—recently blogged on Fightland about her experience going vegan for two weeks. On Fightland, Vice’s MMA-themed site, Bourdain described the trials and tribulations of adjusting from a heavily carnivorous diet to a totally plant-based regimen, with emotions ranging from skepticism (“My husband thinks I’ve completely lost my mind”) to confusion (“Bacon-style veggie protein strip? Bologna-style veggie protein slices?”) to acceptance (“The food is fantastic! So flavorful. I don’t miss meat one bit tonight.”) Although Bourdain does revert to her omnivorous ways after the experiment, she pledges to eat less meat and incorporate more vegetables into her diet henceforth.
