Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently planned an attack on plastic bags in New York City with hopes of generating two green outcomes: money and a cleaner urban landscape. Bloomberg’s proposal calls for charging a 6-cent fee on plastic shopping bags, allocating one cent to store owners as an incentive to comply and the remainder to the city. If the initiative passes, as either a tax or fee, New York City would rake in approximately $16 million a year.
