In a recent article posted on the Business Insider website from the economic-savvy blog fivecentnickel.com, writer and life-long vegetarian Suba Iyer teaches readers how to save money on a meat-free diet. Iyer notes that cutting out meat doesn’t necessarily mean cutting food costs, but with the right grocery shopping choices, one can eat a delicious, healthful diet while bolstering one’s bank account. Some tips Iyer gives include purchasing fruits and veggies that are in season, buying key protein sources such as nuts, grains, and beans, in bulk, and supporting local farmers by joining a CSA or shopping at a farmer’s market. According to Iyer, learning to cook, preparing foods in advance, and knowing when to buy organic produce are also key ways to save money.
