Wayne Pacelle, CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, sat down with Bloomberg Businessweek reporter Patrick Cole to discuss the many projects HSUS is working on, namely the issue of factory farming and fighting ag-gag bills. “[The bills are] aimed at us … When we’ve been successful with a tactic or a strategy, there has been an attempt to take the legs out from under us,” Pacelle details. The article reports that HSUS, the country’s largest animal-welfare group, has 11 million constituents and an annual budget of nearly $160 million. “If we accept that animals feel pain and that they suffer, how can we put them in factory farms, and how could we subject them to laboratory experiments?” he asks Cole.
