Federal Court Upholds West Hollywood’s Fur Ban

Last year, the City of West Hollywood instituted a law that prohibits the sale of wearable fur products, but a legal battle ensued when local retailer Mayfair House Inc., which sells a variety of men’s and women’s fur-lined clothing items, challenged the ordinance. A federal court has sided with the West Hollywood government and the ban was upheld. Chief Judge George H. King, speaking on behalf of the United States District Court for the Central District of California, wrote that the law was not unconstitutional and it demonstrated West Hollywood’s effort to “promote community awareness of animal welfare, foster the City’s goal to be a community that cares about animal welfare, and further the City’s reputation as Cruelty Free Zone for animals.” West Hollywood is the first city in the United States to pass a fur law of this kind.
