The Desoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center goes online today. It will produce 25 megawatts of power, making it the largest solar energy plant in the US. President Obama is scheduled to visit the power plant today in Arcadia, Fla., where it will start generating electricity for a small but significant fraction of Florida Power & Light customers. This plant, plus two other projects by Florida Power & Light, will produce 110 megawatts of power in total, reducing carbon emissions by more than 3.5 million tons. Although it cost $150 million dollars to complete, building the facility also created 400 jobs.
