In the digital age of smart phones, laptops, and instant internet access, the best way to gauge public interest is through online analytics. Recently, the Huffington Post pointed out a Google Trends line graph that indicated the steady rise in the number of people entering the word “vegan” into the search engine, from 2004 to March 2013. The digital stats are bolstered by research commissioned by Vegetarian Resource Group, which found that the number of people who identify as vegans has experienced an 100-percent increase within the last three years. The Huffington Post asserts that veganism’s unprecedented popularity is due to an amalgamation of different reasons that range from health to celebrity endorsement to the recent horsemeat scandal abroad.
