Gov. Kills 2M Wild Animals for Livestock Industry

The animal agriculture industry is notorious for animal cruelty, but a recent article written for the Huffington Post by Stephanie Feldstein, the director of Population and Sustainability for the Center for Biological Diversity, reveals that livestock farming’s insidious practices affect more than the cows kept in captivity. According to Feldstein, last year, the US Department of Agriculture group Wildlife Services, killed more than 2 million native animals including coyotes, foxes, black bears, prairie dogs, and wolves. There is no definitive link between every killing and the livestock industry’s interests, but Feldstein reports that WS frequently responds to farmers’ requests to exterminate animals like prairie dogs and wolves that are a “nuisance.” She calls on readers to sign a petition that calls for greater restrictions for WS killings, and writes that consumers can help take these animals off the fast track to extinction by reducing their meat consumption.
